It helps you negotiate the paper into shape, to form a low-bypass brewing environment where the paper hugs the walls perfectly, forcing water through coffee rather than encouraging it to go around it.

By minimising bypass, you will invariably reach higher extractions in similar brewing times. Bypass can cause blockages, slowing down brews. Minimising this bypass can ensure similar brew times but with a much richer, brighter extraction.
