In November 2025, we had the privilege of visiting Alfredo Castaño Torres at El Recinto, his family farm in Santuario, Risaralda, Colombia. Sitting at 1700–1800 meters above sea level, the 11-hectare farm balances production and preservation, with just 2.5 hectares under coffee and the rest maintained as a natural reserve. Alfredo began his specialty journey in 2012 with Asocafé Tatamá. Today, he produces exceptional microlots using natural, honey, and washed processes with extended fermentation, working with varieties such as this Castillo, Geisha, Sudan Rume, and Supremo.
El Recinto is a story of legacy and dedication. After years of working for others, Alfredo’s father transformed this once overgrown land into a thriving farm and family home. Now managing it independently, Alfredo continues that vision, combining tradition with innovation while protecting the farm’s ecosystem and water sources. For him, coffee is a lifelong pursuit – one rooted in heritage, but driven by the belief that specialty coffee can create new opportunities for future generations.
